Lagoons

[1] -shallow water surrounded by barriers such as coral reefs, barrier islands, sand bars.

Coastal Lagoons

-sheltered by sandbars or barrier islands. sometimes called estuaries.

Atoll Lagoons

-sheltered by coral reefs

Hapua

-primarily freshwater, located near river mouths

Locations

-Sounds of North Carolina -Great barrier reef lagoon -Venice -Maldives -New Caledonia[2]

Plant and Animal life in Lagoons

-numerous species of fish endemic to lagoon conditions such as in new caledonia[3][4]

Importance to Coral Reefs

[5] -serve as a nursery area for a number of species[6]

Dangers: Eutrophication

[7] -being near shore, runoff and other human influences lead to eutorophication which destroys the habitat making it unusable for current species
